Al Ahly and José Riveiro Part Ways After Disappointing Start

In a swift and surprising turn of events, Egyptian giants Al Ahly have mutually agreed to terminate the contract of Spanish coach José Riveiro following just seven matches at the helm. The decision comes in the wake of a 2-0 home defeat to arch-rivals Pyramids on Saturday, a result that proved to be the final straw.

Appointed in late May on a two-year deal, Riveiro took charge ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. His tenure failed to meet expectations: Al Ahly exited the tournament early, drawing two matches and succumbing to a defeat against Palmeiras.

In the current domestic campaign, the team’s form remained lacklustre, recording only one win, two draws and a further defeat in their opening four league fixtures — leaving them languishing in 12th place with a mere five points.

The club’s announcement expressed gratitude to Riveiro and his coaching staff for their efforts, characterising the split as amicable and by mutual consent. No successor has yet been named, though the club’s planning committee is expected to outline its next steps in the coming days.
