Calls Grow for Release of SA Activists

Pressure is mounting on the South African government to intervene following the interception of seven South African activists by Israeli forces. The group was on board a vessel delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed that several boats in the flotilla were “safely stopped” and that passengers were being transferred to an Israeli port. Authorities claim the flotilla was attempting to breach a “lawful naval blockade” around Gaza, though it remains unclear whether the vessels had entered the restricted waters.

The activists have strongly disputed this account, describing the interception as “illegal” and “not an act of defence” but “a brazen act of desperation.” Among those on board is Mandla Mandela, grandson of former President Nelson Mandela, who recorded a video warning that he and others had effectively been abducted by Israeli forces.

Political voices at home have echoed calls for urgent action. The African Transformation Movement’s Zama Ntshona stressed that the government must act swiftly to secure the safe release of the activists.

The incident has sparked wider debate in South Africa about the country’s role in supporting international humanitarian efforts and defending the rights of its citizens abroad.
