Carolina to Chrissiesmeer Road Officially Reopens

The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport has officially reopened the P177 route between Carolina and Chrissiesmeer after the successful completion of a newly built in-situ bridge.

The project was undertaken following the collapse of the previous corrugated metal culvert bridge, which had cut off an important link between Msukaligwa Local Municipality and Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality. The department prioritised reconstruction to restore safe and reliable connectivity for residents and travellers.

Despite heavy rainfall on the day, the official opening ceremony went ahead, attended by the Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Cllr Mngomezulu, along with local councillors and community members.

The new bridge forms part of the Provincial Culvert Bridge Replacement Programme and has been designed for improved strength, stability, and long-term durability. Officials say the infrastructure will better withstand environmental pressures, ensuring safer journeys for motorists and reducing the risk of future disruptions.

The department expressed pride in the achievement, emphasising its ongoing commitment to upgrading the province’s road network. “This bridge is not only about improved access but also about building infrastructure that lasts and benefits communities for years to come,” the statement read.

The reopening of the P177 marks an important milestone for the region, restoring a critical transport route that supports mobility, local economic activity, and community development.
