Lifestyle Audits for Officials Under Review

Concerns are mounting over the lack of lifestyle audits for government employees, prompting the Public Service and Administration Portfolio Committee to take action. These audits, intended to be conducted annually, aim to identify potential corruption among officials.

The audits were introduced as a measure to scrutinize government employees and directors who display unexplained wealth. However, despite being a mandatory requirement for all government departments, very few audits have been completed.

The committee has pledged to investigate the matter and ensure that the audits are properly implemented. It will also oversee the enforcement of the guidelines governing the process.

As part of the audit, public servants must submit a declaration of interest, which will be cross-checked against records from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and other relevant institutions. This verification process is designed to detect any financial discrepancies and uphold accountability within the public sector.
