MEC urges parents to protect children this festive season

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, has called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant in protecting children during the festive season.

The MEC warned that the excitement associated with the holidays often leads to neglect, leaving children vulnerable to traffickers, molesters and alcohol abuse. He expressed serious concern about incidents of children consuming alcohol, some of which have been shared on social media.

“We have seen children drinking on social media – this is unacceptable. Parents must stay vigilant; there are predators waiting for any lapse,” said Macie.

He urged families travelling during the holidays to take extra precautions to secure their homes. Residents were advised to leave a trusted relative behind or inform neighbours to keep an eye on their properties, as criminals often target houses that appear unoccupied during this period.

Macie also reiterated the importance of road safety, particularly as traffic volumes increase during the festive season.

“Drink at home or where you won’t need to drive, ensure children are buckled up, remain patient on the roads and adjust to weather conditions. Drunk driving will not be tolerated,” he said.

The MEC appealed to all residents to work together to ensure a safe and incident-free festive season for families and communities across Mpumalanga.
