MER CEO Secures Key Global Regulatory Roles

The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) has announced a major milestone for its Chief Executive Officer, Vusi Mtsweni, who has been appointed to two influential roles within the continental and international gambling regulatory landscape.

At a continental level, Mtsweni has been confirmed as a member of the African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) CEO’s Forum Steering Committee. ALGA is a non-profit body that unites gambling and lottery regulators, operators, public-interest organisations, and academic institutions across Africa. His appointment reflects his strong leadership, the credibility of MER, and South Africa’s central role in advancing responsible gaming practices.

On the international stage, Mtsweni has also been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR), representing the African Region. This confirmation came during IAGR’s Annual Business Meeting, held in Toronto, Canada, on 23 October 2025. IAGR is a global network that fosters collaboration among regulators, promotes knowledge exchange, and strengthens best practices in gambling governance.

“These appointments are not only a recognition of Mtsweni’s personal leadership but also a proud moment for the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator and the Province of Mpumalanga,” said Ms Thando Lamula-Shirinda, Chairperson of the MER Board. “They position our province and our country at the forefront of global discussions on responsible gambling and sustainable regulation.”

Under Mtsweni’s guidance, MER has prioritised governance reform, modernised regulatory systems, and championed responsible gambling initiatives in line with international standards. His involvement in these continental and global forums is expected to boost cross-border cooperation, enhance regulatory capacity, and strengthen knowledge-sharing across Africa.

The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator congratulated Mr Mtsweni on the achievement, noting that his appointments bring honour not only to MER but also to South Africa’s broader regulatory fraternity.
