Police Officers Arrested for Drug Trafficking
 In a bold show of accountability, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga arrested three of its own officers on 10 June afternoon for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the three officers, aged between 32 and 49, were caught red-handed escorting a vehicle transporting dagga along the N4 Road near the Matsulu T-junction at approximately 15:00.
âThe officers were in full uniform, on duty, and driving a marked police vehicle when they were intercepted,â said Ndubane.
The intercepted Toyota Corolla was found carrying 107 bags of dagga, with an estimated street value in the millions of rands.
The officers, who are attached to the White River Flying Squad, were arrested by fellow SAPS members from Matsulu SAPS, acting on intelligence received earlier that day.
They now face charges related to:
Corrupt activities
Defeating the ends of justice
Potential additional charges pending further investigation
Two civilians a 44-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman â who were inside the drug-laden vehicle were also arrested and face charges of dealing in dagga.
All five suspects are expected to appear before the Nelspruit Magistrateâs Court on 12 June.
Internal Disciplinary Action Underway The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, condemned the officersâ actions and reiterated that no one is above the law.
âIf any member is found on the wrong side of the law regardless of rank or position they will face the consequences without fear or favour,â said Mkhwanazi.
