Preliminary investigations into the deadly crash at Van Reenen’s Pass on January 6 have revealed that the minibus involved lost control and veered into the path of an oncoming truck. The horrific accident claimed 17 lives, leaving only one survivor—a baby girl—who is currently receiving medical care in hospital.

The collision occurred amid heavy rainfall, and investigators are considering several contributing factors, including speed, vehicle defects, and possible recklessness on the part of the minibus driver.

The truck driver, a Zimbabwean national, reportedly contacted his employer before fleeing the scene. Authorities are working to locate him.

Investigative Efforts

A technical team comprising the Department of Transport, Road Traffic Inspectorate, South African National Road Agency, and South African Police Service (SAPS) met under the leadership of Major General Gonya, the Cluster Commander of Thukela District, to initiate a thorough probe into the crash.
